A new call. The new year invites us to wake up, to see with fresh eyes.

The beginning of a new year generally brings with it new desires and new hopes. We hope the world will be better, that we can live in peace and that everyone will have access to a life of dignity. We hope that all will go well and that we can resolve our small and big difficulties. We also look for ways to strengthen ourselves in order to focus our energies towards the goals that we feel are basic to achieve in the time ahead…

Without a doubt, with greater or lesser intensity, a call resonates within us to move, to act, to contribute all that is within our means so that our hopes may become a reality.

The new year invites us to wake up, to see with fresh eyes and to recognize all the possibilities we have to reach out to one another so that our commitment may be ongoing and of great significance.

The new year invites us to turn our eyes towards all the oppressions that take place under the sun, to see the tears of the oppressed and who have no one to comfort them… (Ecl. 4:1). It calls us to recognize that the task before us is great and that a fresh look is necessary, a “blue vision, ” as it is called by the journalist F. Javier Sancho, one that allows us to discover the strength of love that transform from within, even the darkest realities of our world.

Together may we comfort, transform, commit ourselves. This is our desire for each and every one in this new year.
