We continue to make Jeanne de Lestonnac’s dream possible.

November 2013 | Lestonnac ODN

Beatriz Acosta Mesa, odn (Roma, Italia)

We are but a few days away from November 21, the date on which the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Child Mary in the Temple. In 1610, Jeanne de Lestonnac combined this tradition with her educational work, and she expressed her desire that it continue to be so in the future.

In a very simple way: processing as a group with a lighted candles singing songs to Mary, Jeanne wanted to give visibility, through the students, to this educational work and express gratitude to life and to the Lord of life for the many graces received.

Without a doubt, this religious feast has important social implications for the Company of Mary. Jeanne understood well the role of a good education in the transformation of society, and she wanted to communicate it beyond the confines of the school. She wanted to raise the awareness of the society of her time of this public good that should be made available to all without distinction of sex or social condition. She wanted to highlight that the woman, held in less esteem in the society of her time, is an agent for change and more so when she holds values that make the world a more humane place.

Our efforts today to provide a quality education where each person discovers the tools for growth and forming life goals, in freedom and responsibility, oriented towards the service of others is to share with the world a light of hope; this justifies all the efforts dedicated to this task.

On this feast let us renew the desire to continue making Jeanne de Lestonnac’s dream possible within the family, the school and society.
